Upper Mustang Trek

Upper Mustang Trek is one of the hidden trekking destinations in the Himalayan part of Nepal, located in the remote area in Nepal with highly preserved Tibetan culture. The trail follows the ancient salt caravan route through which the people of Mustang traded salt for grain from the lowlands. You can walk without worrying about rain as this region lies in the rain shadow area of the Annapurna region.

Upper Mustang Trek is one of the restricted trekking destinations in the Annapurna region of Nepal. The trek begins from Pokhara after a 6-hour drive from Kathmandu Valley. The region presents you with a lost culture of the forbidden lands of the past and this region is untouched and unchanged from outside cultures for centuries. We can see the uniqueness of tree-less landscapes, rocky trails, and the wonderful views of the mountain. Trekkers need to obtain special trekking permit to trek in this area which  is restricted by the Nepal government. Trekking in this wonderful region is considered a total wilderness adventure tour covering scenic landscapes, impressive hilly terrains, lush green forests, and flora and fauna of this wonderful land. It offers one of the majestic views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, and many other mountains. Mostly Gurung people are found in this area and these people are influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. The best season for trekking is from February to June and from September to December.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

When you land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu there will be a representative from our company to meet you. You will directly drive to the hotel to check in. At night you will meet your guide, hear additional information about the trip, and have dinner.

Day 02: Drive to Pokhara (827m) 5-6 hours

The very next morning, if the hotel is able to prepare breakfast then will have our breakfast in the hotel and if not we will have our breakfast on the way. We will drive along the scenic Prithvi Highway where we will enjoy short stops for lunch and scenic beauty all the way around. After a 6-hour drive from Kathmandu, we will reach Pokhara, check into the hotel, explore all around the valley, and spend overnight.

Day 03: Fly to Jomsom and Trek to Kagbeni (2,810m) 3-4 hours

Early in the morning after having breakfast, we will drive to the local airport to fly to Jomsom which is very famous for its apples, strong winds, and landscapes. After reaching Jomsom, we will start our trekking towards Kagbeni.  On the route, we will have an opportunity for wonderful views of the mountains .

Day 04: Trek to Chele (3,050m) 5-6 hours

The valley narrows further north and a steep trail leads up to Chele. The trail guarantees excellent views of the beautiful landscapes and the mighty mountains. We will have our lunch on the way then trek to Chele where we will spend one night.

Day 05: Trek to Syanbochen (3,475m) 6-7 hours

We will have a wonderful views of the mountains and beautiful landscapes. We will cross many suspension bridges before reaching Syanbochen. On the route, we will have our lunch on the way and trek towards Syanbochen where we will spend one night.

Day 06: Trek to Ghami (3,520m) 5-6 hours

The path descends gradually towards the Ghami La pass. The trail rises to a knoll and continues up the side of a spectacularly steep canyon and on to the Chele La. We will have our lunch on the way then after head to Ghami where we will spend one night.

Day 07: Trek to Tsarang (3,620m) 5-6 hours

The trail heads up the centre of the valley through the fields and past Chortens to the Nyi La. There is also a group of Chortens standing in front of a red wall which forms the end of the valley. We will have a wonderful view of the mountains and suspendion bridges before reaching Tsarang where we will spend one night.

Day 08: Trek to Lo-Manthang (3,730m) 3-4 hours

Today we will climb to a ridge Chorten overlooking the Tholung Valley and turn northwards towards the windy Lo. We will have our lunch on the way then after we will move towards Lo Manthang where we will spend one night in this wonderful land.

Day 09: Rest Day in Lo Manthang

This day is for rest. Early in the morning after wake up, we will have our breakfast and then after we will explore Lo Manthang. We will have an opportunity to spend some time in the lands which will improve our physical and mental makeup for further trekking.

Day 10: Trek to Drakmar (3810 m) 6-7 hours

Our trail passes through Gyakar village which houses a century-old Gompa with beautiful rock paintings. We will have our lunch on the way  and then, after taking some rest, and move towards Drakmar where we will spend one night.

Day 11: Trek to Ghiling (3,806m) 5-6 hours

The vegetation is more sparse, allowing magical views of the mountains and beautiful landscapes. We will have our lunch on the way and then, after taking some rest and move towards Ghiling where we will spend one night in this beautiful land.

Day 12: Trek to Chhuksang (3050m) 5-6 hours

While doing this day trek, we will have an opportunity to see wonderful views of the mountains and beautiful villages. We will cross many suspension bridges before reaching Chhuksang where we will spend one night.

Day 13: Trek to Jomsom (2,700m) 6-7 hours

From here, we will trek on the windy trail of Kali Gandaki Valley. Before reaching Jomsom, we will have an opportunity to see caves, meadows, and also reach Kagbeni which is one of the best places in this trekking.  After walking 6 to 7 hours from Chhoksang we will finally reach Jomsom.

Day 14: Fly Back to Pokhara

After having breakfast, we will drive to the local airport of Jomsom to take a flight towards Pokhara,  also known as the City of the Lake. After reaching Pokhara, we will explore all around the valley and spend one night.

Day 15: Drive to Kathmandu

We will head back to Kathmandu Valley fon the same route we drove towards Pokhara Valley. We will have our lunch on the way and after reaching Kathmandu, will check into the hotel, spend some time around the Thamel Bazaar, and spend one night in this wonderful valley.

Day 16: Final Departure

We will drop you off at Tribhuvan International Airport with the hope that you have had a wonderful time in our small country. We will also be hoping that this will not the last chance to serve you.
