Upper Dolpo Trek

Upper Dolpo Trek is a fascinating trekking destination in the Himalaya part of mid-west of Nepal where we will able to walk in complete wilderness in harmony with pure nature on this unspoiled and untouched area. You will able to freely explore the region in dry weather without worrying about the rains of this region. The trail crosses three relatively high passes, good paths are followed throughout and there is no trekking on glaciers. The remote and rugged protected areas are both scenically and culturally attractive. On this trek, the trekker will experience the real adventure of walking off-the-beaten-trail, composed of steep sloping hills. The trek will take us through a protected area and leads us to amazing Phoksundo Lake which is surrounded by flora and fauna. This offers us an actual lifetime adventure. We have an opportunity to see a superb combination of Tibetan Buddhism  with mountain views, high passes, beautiful landscapes, and sparkling lakes.

Upper Dolpo Trek takes you to through one of the most beautiful districts in the remote Himalayan part of Nepal. You can explore the beauty of nature, high mountain passes, amazing glaciers, hidden valleys, ancient places, and culture.  Trekking in this wilderness area is a much cultural experience as a physical and visual one. This destination is the area where the visitors rarely visit because it lies in the high passes. The area is famous for the rarely found animals such as snow leopards and blue sheep which are especially found in the Dhaulagiri ranges of the Himalayan part of Nepal. It begins from Nepalgunj after 1-hour flight from Kathmandu Valley. The trail is a joyful experience, passing through the traditional villages, deep gorges, remote areas, and farming lands.   The best time for trekking is from March to May and from September to November.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

When you land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu there will be a representative from our company to meet you. You will directly drive to the hotel to check in. At night you will meet your guide, hear additional information about the trip, and have dinner.

Day 02: Fly to Nepalgunj 1 hour

If the hotel is able to make breakfast we will have our breakfast and then drive to the local airport of Kathmandu to fly toNepalgunj. After the 1-hour flight from Kathmandu, we will check into the hotel,explore all around the valley, and spend one night.

Day 03: Fly to Jhuphal and Trek to Dunai (2,850m) 2-3 hours

After spending one night in Nepalgunj, we will fly to Jumla, the capital of the Karnali Zone and a gateway for trekkers who want to explore the remote Karnali region of Nepal. After the 20-minute flight from Nepalgunj, we will  walk to Dunai where we will spend one night.

Day 04: Trek to Ankhe (2,896m) 5-6 hours

The trail passes through an area which is overgrown with marijuana plants, but also has crops for the villagers. We will have our lunch on the way and then after we will slowly move towards Ankhe where we will spend one night.

Day 05: Trek to Sulighat 5-6 hours

Our trails ascend and descend along a wooded riverbank and the up on a steep trail. We will have our lunch on the way and then we will walk to Sulighat where we will spend one night.

Day 06: Trek to Phoksundo Lake (3,611m) 4-5 hours

The trail leads upwards through terraced lands with rice fields that seem impossibly green. It is an enjoyable day in preparation for our further destinations to come.  We will spend one night in Phoksundo Lake.

Day 07: Rest at Phoksundo Lake

This day is for rest. Early in the morning after wake up, we will have our breakfast and then after we will explore Phoksundo Lake. We will have an opportunity to spend some time in the lands which will improve our physical and mental makeup for further trekking.

Day 08: Trek to Phoksundo Khola 4-5 hours

This picturesque trail is suspended on a gangway of wood supported on pegs heading towards Phoksundo Khola.  On the route, we will have a chance to see the wonderful views of the mountains and beautiful landscapes.

Day 09: Trek to Phoksundo Bhanjyang 6-7 hours

The trail  leads us along the level path through a glacial valley and heads due north where there is no trail as such. We will have an opportunity to see wonderful views of the mountains and have our lunch.  After lunch we will move towards Phoksundi Bhanjyang where we will spend one night.

Day 10: Trek to Shey Gompa (4,500m) 5-6 hours

While doing this day trek, we will have an opportunity to see wonderful views of the mountains and beautiful villages and to cross many suspension bridges before reaching Shey Gompa where we will spend one night.

Day 11: Rest at Shey Gompa

This day is for rest. Early in the morning after wake up, we will have our breakfast and then after we will explore Shey Gompa. We will have an opportunity to spend some time in the lands which will improve our physical and mental makeup for further trekking.

Day 12: Trek to Namduna Gaun (4,800m) 6-7 hours

After having a hot breakfast, we will have an opportunity to see the natural beauty of this wonderful land. We will have our lunch on the way then, after taking some rest, trek to Namduna Gaun where we will spend one night.

Day 13: Trek to Saldang (3,620m) 4-5 hours

The trail is dusty and the views are of  barren landscapes. We will explore the red stone monastery, built against the backdrop of a cliff on the north wall of a gorge.

Day 14: Trek to Yangze Gompa (4,960m) 4-5 hours

After having breakfast in Saldang, we will walk towards Yangze Gompa. We will have our lunch on the way then head toYangze Gompa where we will spend one night.

Day 15: Trek to Sibu (4,560m) 6-7 hours

We pass various Chortens and Mani walls that signify the mythical prowess of the local spiritual people. There is also a monastery on the top of a high cliff.  We will spend one night in Sibu.

Day 16: Trek to Jeng-la Phedi (4,900m) 5-6 hours

The trail winds through the village and climbs a ridge topped by a large Chorten and then climbs gradually past an impressive Mani wall. After 5 to 6 hours walking we will reach our destination, check into the hotel, explore all around the valley, and spend overnight.

Day 17: Trek to Tokyu Gaon (4209m) 5-6 hours

In the time of the 6-hour journey, we will have an opportunity to see the wonderful views of the mountain and beautiful landscapes.  We will have our lunch on the way then move towards Tokyu Gaon where we will spend one night.

Day 18: Trekto Dho Tarap (4,040m) 4-5 hours

While doing this day trek, we will have an opportunity to have more wonderful views. We will cross many suspension bridges before reaching Do Tarap where we will spend one night in this wonderful land.

Day 19: Rest Day at Dho Tarap

This day is another for rest. After breakfast we will explore Dho Tarap. We will have an opportunity to spend some time in the village and lands which will improve our physical and mental makeup for further trekking.

Day 20: Trekking to Tarap Khola (3,800m) 6-7 hours

We walk along juniper and wild roses bushes just above the tree line. The local people descend with their castle searching the grazing meadows in the winter. You go through the narrow gorge with the rivers rushing through.

Day 21: Trekking to Khanigaon (3,150m) 4-5 hours

We continue to walk down the gorge of the Tarap River. The quality of the path varies from the board, smooth and firm to very narrow and crumbly. Before reaching Khanigaon, we will pass through many bridges and beautiful landscapes.

Day 22: Trekking to Tarakot (2,537m) 4-5 hours

The walking trekking in Upper Dolpo Trek from where we will walk from Khanigaon to Tarakot. We will have our lunch on the way then after slowly move towards Tarakot where we will spend one night in this beautiful land.

Day 23: Trekking to Dunai (2,140m) 5-6 hours

The day starts with a gentle climb. We will pass through the lush forest of rhododendron, oak, and we will have an opportunity to see the animals like Langur, red panda, and Himalayan black bears etch before reaching Dunai where we will spend one night.

Day 24: Trekking to Jhuphal 2-3 hours

Our trail descends and passes through the lush forest of birch. On the route, we will have an opportunity to see the wonderful views of the mountain, and beautiful landscape. We will cross many suspension bridges before reaching Jhupal where we will spend one night.

Day 25: Fly to Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu

From Jumla, we will move towards the local airport to fly towards Nepalgunj. After 20 minutes flight from Jumla, we will reach Nepalgunj and we will have our lunch and drive toward the airport to fly towards Kathmandu valley. Upon reach in Kathmandu valley, first of all, we will check out the hotel and spend some time around the Thamel Bazaar and spend one night in this wonderful valley.

Day 26: Final Departure

We will drop you off at Tribhuvan International Airport with the hope that you have had a wonderful time in our small country. We will also be hoping that this will not the last chance to serve you.
